Israel and Morocco agree to open full embassies

Israel and Morocco agreed on Wednesday to upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies and exchange ambassadors, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations nearly six years after they restored ties under the U.S.-backed Abraham Accords. The agreement was announced following a trilateral meeting in New York between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. The meeting, held on September 16, 2026, reaffirmed the commitment to the 2020 joint declaration that established the framework for normalization. The three countries stated they were undaunted by regional challenges and continued to believe that full diplomatic, peaceful, and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel are in their common interest. Under the new agreement, Israel and Morocco will establish full embassies and appoint ambassadors. They also agreed to take necessary measures for the prompt reinstatement of direct flights between the two countries, including by Moroccan airlines, before the end of 2026.
