Irish Woman Two Others Die in Iceland Crash

An 18-year-old Irish woman was among three young people killed in a tragic car crash in Iceland. Hannah Jane Large, from Greystones, County Wicklow, died alongside two Icelandic youths, 16-year-old Arndís Halla Guðlaugsdóttir and 21-year-old Benjamín Guðmundsson. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 31, 2026, when the BMW they were traveling in veered off a road approximately 29 kilometers south of the capital, Reykjavík. The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to Hannah Large's family. Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir paid tribute to all three victims on social media, stating, "My thoughts are with the families and friends of the young individuals who died in the tragic accident last night. No words can convey such a loss." She added, "When grief knocks in this way, we are reminded of how precious and fragile life is. Let's be careful and look out for each other." Hannah's mother, Sam Large, responded to the president's message, sharing that her daughter had "fallen in love" with Iceland and that her final days there were the happiest of her life.
