Irish Government Approves Dublin MetroLink to Proceed to Tender

The Irish Government has approved Dublin's long-planned MetroLink project to proceed to the detailed tender stage, with enabling works on the ground expected to begin in 2027. The decision marks a major milestone for the 19-kilometre rail line, which will connect Swords and Dublin Airport to the city centre and Ranelagh. Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien presented a revised business case to Cabinet, showing the project's estimated cost has more than doubled since 2022. The new cost range is between €14.44 billion and €17.49 billion, with a central estimate of €15.75 billion, excluding VAT. The final cost will only be determined after competitive bids are received and evaluated in late 2027. "We expect enabling works, including utility diversions and site preparation, to commence from next year, followed by major tunnelling and station construction works in 2028," Minister O'Brien said. He pledged a "razorlike focus" to ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget, noting that specific governance structures will be implemented.
