Irish Gangs Store Crypto Keys in Rented Vaults

Organized crime groups in Ireland are increasingly storing cryptocurrency private keys and seed phrases in rented vaults, alongside traditional assets like cash and luxury goods, according to the head of the country's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB). This practice is part of a broader strategy by criminals to diversify their holdings, reduce the risk of asset seizure, and leverage the perceived anonymity of digital currencies. Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins, who leads the CAB, stated that investigators have encountered this method during their cases and have reported the findings to the government's Anti-Money Laundering Steering Committee. The committee is preparing Ireland for upcoming European Union regulations designed to combat financial crime. Gubbins noted that the contents of these rented vaults can include cryptocurrency access credentials, cash, watches, handbags, and even passports, representing a mix of physical and digital assets. Despite the shift towards storing digital asset access, Gubbins emphasized that cryptocurrency use among Irish criminal groups remains relatively basic, with cash still dominating proceeds from activities like drug trafficking.
