Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz within seven days

Iran offered on Tuesday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, according to a senior Iranian official who spoke to news agencies. The proposal was delivered to Washington through mediators on September 16, the official said, and Tehran plans to discuss the initiative with intermediary countries during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Iranian delegation has full authority to revive diplomacy with the United States, the official added. Under the terms described, Washington would first need to formally announce that it wants to resolve the conflict diplomatically and agree on a timeline for negotiations. Iran would then reopen the strait within a week and resume talks aimed at a permanent end to hostilities. The senior official said there is a possibility of moving toward an agreement, provided Washington demonstrates seriousness and commitment. The official ruled out a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump at the UN headquarters, though Pezeshkian traveled to New York on Tuesday for the General Assembly.
