Iran Doubles Gasoline Price for Heavy Users

Iran has implemented a new gasoline pricing system that doubles the cost for consumers exceeding a monthly fuel allowance, marking the second price adjustment since December. Under the revised structure, motorists who purchase more than 110 liters of gasoline per month will now pay 100,000 rials per liter, a significant increase from the previous rate of 50,000 rials. The government stated that the additional revenue generated from this measure will be distributed among households. The decision, announced early Tuesday, September 8, 2026, comes as Iran grapples with severe economic pressures, including a weakening national currency, high inflation, and rising living costs. Officials cited the "current situation" and the need to manage limited supplies as reasons for the adjustment. Daily gasoline consumption reached a record 145 million liters in August, while domestic production capacity stood at approximately 122 million liters per day, necessitating imports to meet demand. Experts attribute high consumption rates to factors such as an aging vehicle fleet, insufficient public transportation, and inefficient fuel usage.
