IPL 2027 Auction Planned for India Return

Published 16 September 2026

The Indian Premier League's 2027 players auction is planned to be held in India, marking a return to domestic hosting after three consecutive editions abroad, according to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal. The decision, however, is contingent on securing a suitable venue during the challenging October-December wedding season. Dhumal, who is expected to be reelected as IPL chairman at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's Annual General Meeting on September 18, told the Press Trust of India that logistical and financial considerations are driving the desire to bring the auction home. The previous three auctions were held in Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and Dubai. "Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don't get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get the venue," Dhumal said. A primary factor is the nature of the upcoming event. As a mini auction rather than a mega auction, franchises are reportedly reluctant to bear the significant costs of sending delegates overseas. Hosting domestically would reduce these logistical expenses for the teams.
