iPhone 18 Pro Debuts Variable Aperture Camera

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, placing camera performance at the center of its pitch for the premium smartphone market. The headline feature is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, a first for the iPhone, which allows the opening that lets in light to change size for different lighting conditions and depth-of-field effects. Apple says the system delivers improved low-light photography, sharper detail and greater creative control. The variable aperture is built around six laser-cut blades that move between four aperture settings, according to the company's announcement. The Camera app can adjust the aperture automatically based on depth of field and lighting, or users can take manual control. Apple describes the capability as enabling truly unique shots that were not possible before on an iPhone. The new models also introduce Pro Controls, a customizable camera interface that lets users manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, or check exposure levels with a live histogram. The interface works across both photo and video capture.
