Inter Miami wins Campeones Cup as Messi scores 100th goal

Published 17 September 2026

Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 on Wednesday to win the 2026 Campeones Cup, with Lionel Messi scoring his 100th goal for the club and assisting the second. The victory, secured at Nu Stadium in Miami, marked Messi's 49th career team trophy, extending his record as the most decorated player in football history. Messi opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a header from a Luis Suarez cross, a milestone that also represented his 929th career goal. He later delivered a corner kick in the 81st minute that Casemiro headed home to seal the win. The Argentine was named the match's Most Valuable Player. The result gave Inter Miami its fourth trophy since Messi's arrival in 2023, following the 2023 Leagues Cup, 2024 Supporters Shield, and 2025 MLS Cup. The club's defensive performance was notable, with goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair making three first-half saves to record only his third clean sheet of the season. The match was the managerial debut for head coach Kily Gonzalez, who was hired 19 days prior and received his work visa on Tuesday.
