Instagram Mandates Labels for AI-Generated Profiles

Instagram announced a new policy on Monday, August 31, 2026, requiring accounts that feature AI-generated people as their main identity to use a mandatory "AI-generated profile" label. The platform stated that accounts failing to comply could face reduced reach, meaning their posts may not be recommended to a wider audience or could become harder to discover. The change is designed to increase transparency and help users distinguish between real human influencers and synthetic personas. The new label replaces a previous optional "AI creator" tag. Instagram said the updated designation is specifically for profiles that "feature an AI-generated person" and should make clear when a profile subject was generated or substantially created with artificial intelligence. The company emphasized that the policy does not apply to routine AI-assisted edits, such as photo editing, caption polishing, or creating graphics. The decision was driven by user feedback. An Instagram spokesperson said, "We've heard from our community that they don't like coming across a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated.
