India Mandates Aadhaar for LPG Subsidies from October 1
The Indian government has mandated that domestic LPG consumers must complete biometric Aadhaar authentication to book refills at subsidized prices beginning October 1, 2026. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the requirement on September 19, 2026, stating it aims to ensure subsidies reach only eligible households and prevent diversion of cooking gas for commercial use. As of September 19, 2026, 27.43 crore active consumers, representing 89.9% of the total, have already completed the authentication process. Consumers who have finished this step will not need to take further action and will continue receiving refills as usual. For those who have not, subsidized booking will be enabled once authentication is completed. Consumers can complete the biometric verification through several channels: during LPG delivery using the oil marketing company's mobile application, at distributor showrooms, or via self-service through apps such as IndianOil ONE for Indane, HelloBPCL for Bharatgas, and HP PAY for HP Gas. The government has urged remaining consumers to complete the process before the deadline.
