India Gives No Timeline for Hasina Extradition Review

Published 4 October 2026

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is undergoing a legal review, but India cannot provide a timeline for her return. Trivedi made the remarks Saturday, October 3, during a discussion in Dhaka, according to reports of the event. Trivedi said India had repeatedly told Bangladesh that the request was being considered through a legal process. He did not specify what stage the review had reached or what steps remained. The available accounts do not establish whether Indian authorities have made a decision, and no date for a decision was given. Hasina has been in India since August 5, 2024, when she left Bangladesh as protests intensified and her government fell. Trivedi said she arrived on a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft, rather than an Indian military aircraft, and that she was still prime minister at the time. He said India had little choice but to allow the aircraft to land. That account of the arrival was conveyed by Trivedi; the reports do not independently establish the flight details.
