India Envoy Says Modi Wants Rahman Visit to Be Memorable

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants his Bangladeshi counterpart Tarique Rahman's proposed visit to India to be "memorable," as diplomatic uncertainty persists over the trip. The remarks, made during a reception in Dhaka on August 19, 2026, come amid strained bilateral ties, with Bangladesh demanding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Speaking to Bangladeshi business leaders and a visiting Confederation of Indian Industry delegation, Trivedi conveyed a message from Modi emphasizing the need for a meeting. "Prime Minister Modi just mentioned one thing. We need to meet," Trivedi said, adding that Modi assured Rahman would receive an "honorable reception as he deserves." The envoy stressed that closer engagement between the leaders would benefit the people and businesses of both nations. The proposed visit is linked to Rahman's potential attendance at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, 2026. However, the trip has been complicated by Dhaka's demand for the extradition of Hasina, who was ousted in August 2024 and sentenced to death in absentia by a Bangladeshi tribunal in November 2025.
