India designates Shahzad Bhatti Network as terrorist organisation

The Indian government has officially designated the Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN) as a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the decision on September 16, 2026, through a gazette notification that adds SBN as the 46th entry on the government's list of designated terrorist organisations. The notification states the government believes SBN is involved in terrorism and has participated in various acts of terrorism in India. It alleges the network is a Pakistan-based, ISI-backed syndicate whose objective is to recruit vulnerable youth and local criminals to smuggle arms, explosives, and narcotics across the border. The group is accused of threatening India's democratic system, communal harmony, and internal security through violent activities. Home Minister Amit Shah announced the designation, stating it aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
