India Celebrates National Sports Day Honoring Dhyan Chand
India observed National Sports Day on August 29, 2026, honoring the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and celebrating athletic achievement across the nation. The annual commemoration, established in 2012, serves as a platform to recognize sporting excellence and promote physical fitness, with the President of India conferring prestigious national awards at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Major Dhyan Chand, born Dhyan Singh in Allahabad in 1905, is revered as the "Wizard of Hockey" for his extraordinary skill and goalscoring prowess. He was the central figure in India's golden era of field hockey, leading the national team to three consecutive Olympic gold medals at the 1928 Amsterdam, 1932 Los Angeles, and 1936 Berlin Games. His international career spanned from 1926 to 1948, during which he scored over 400 goals in 185 matches. The nickname "Chand," meaning moon in Hindi, originated from his practice sessions held at night under moonlight after completing his duties in the British Indian Army. The day's significance extends beyond commemorating one athlete.
