India Auto Retail Hits Record; Alt Fuels Lead PVs

Automobile retail sales in India reached a record 24,23,201 units in August 2026, marking a 17.51 percent increase year-over-year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). This performance represents the highest-ever August for Indian auto retail. However, overall sales saw a seasonal dip of 6.48 percent compared to July 2026, attributed to a monsoon lull and a festival calendar that shifted major buying periods into September. A significant development highlighted by FADA was the historic shift in the passenger vehicle (PV) market's fuel mix. For the first time, alternative fuels-comprising compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid, and electric vehicles-collectively accounted for 41.95 percent of PV sales, surpassing petrol-powered vehicles, which held 40.85 percent. This marks a substantial change from just over a year ago when petrol led the segment by nearly eleven percentage points. Within the alternative fuel category, CNG captured 25.28 percent of the PV market, hybrids secured 9.04 percent, and electric vehicles accounted for 7.63 percent.
