India Advances Semiconductor Exports and Ecosystem

At the SEMICON India 2026 conference in New Delhi, Indian officials announced significant progress in the country's semiconductor sector, highlighting chip exports and a strategic shift towards building a comprehensive ecosystem. Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India-designed and India-made chips are now being exported to Japan, Germany, Switzerland, and China, marking a milestone in the nation's technological advancement. Vaishnaw noted that assembly, testing, marking, and packaging units are already shipping to Japan, while chips are used in products bound for Switzerland and Germany. He emphasized that indigenization is progressing across the value chain, with Lam Research localizing a complex piece of semiconductor equipment in India for the first time outside the United States. The government is targeting 200 chip design companies, and five manufacturing plants have begun commercial production.
