Imran Tahir sets T20 record as oldest five-wicket taker

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir has set a new world record as the oldest player to claim a five-wicket haul in men's Twenty20 cricket. The 47-year-old South African achieved the milestone while playing for the Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Tahir recorded figures of 5 wickets for 17 runs in his four-over spell at Providence Stadium. At 47 years and 166 days old, he surpassed the previous record held by Cook Islands spinner Tomakunte Ritawa, who was 46 years and 299 days when he took a five-wicket haul in 2022. This latest achievement marks Tahir's sixth five-wicket haul in T20 cricket and his fourth after turning 40. The Guyana Amazon Warriors secured a four-wicket victory in the match. Saint Lucia Kings were bowled out for 119 in 18.5 overs, with Kamil Pooran top-scoring with 43 runs. In response, Guyana reached the target of 120 in 18.3 overs, finishing on 122 for six. Quentin Sampson was instrumental in the chase, smashing an unbeaten 37 runs off just 11 balls, including five sixes and a four, to seal the win.
