Illinois Governor Pritzker Reveals 80-Pound Weight Loss Using GLP-1 Drug

Published 22 September 2026

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker publicly disclosed for the first time on Monday that he has lost 80 pounds using a GLP-1 medication after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago. The 61-year-old Democrat revealed the diagnosis and his use of the popular weight-loss drug in interviews with CBS News and NBC Chicago, marking the first time he has confirmed the medical details behind his noticeable weight loss. Pritzker said he was placed on insulin and prescribed a GLP-1 medication following his diabetes diagnosis. He stated he is no longer on insulin and that his current glucose levels indicate he is no longer diabetic or prediabetic. The governor combined the medication with a routine of walking nearly four miles daily along Chicago's Lake Michigan path. The disclosure comes as Pritzker, a billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, is widely considered a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. He has traveled to early primary states and recently launched a political action committee to support Democratic House candidates.
