ICMR says H1N1 strain not new, no nationwide vaccine campaign

The Indian Council of Medical Research has stated that the H1N1 influenza virus currently circulating in India is not a new strain and that the government does not recommend a nationwide vaccination campaign, even as Delhi reports a significant surge in cases. The clarification comes amid rising infections in the national capital and increased public concern. According to Delhi health department data, the city has recorded 1,777 H1N1 cases up to August 20, 2026, as part of a total of 2,392 Influenza A cases. This represents a more than sixfold increase compared to the 229 H1N1 cases recorded during the same period last year. On August 20 alone, 114 new H1N1 cases were reported.
