ICE arrests California assemblywoman staffer at Las Vegas airport

Immigration agents arrested HoYin Mo, a field representative for California Assemblywoman Catherine Stefani, during an operation at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security said. Mo, a Hong Kong native and former news anchor and reporter at San Francisco's Chinese-language station KTSF Channel 26, was taken into custody during what DHS described as a targeted enforcement operation. The department said Mo lawfully entered the United States on a temporary basis on January 13, 2020, but failed to depart by May 15, 2020, constituting an overstay. Work authorization or a pending application do not confer legal status in the United States, DHS said, adding that the arrest reflected a policy shift from the previous administration that had allowed people without lawful status to travel domestically. Mo joined Stefani's office in January 2025, according to his LinkedIn profile, and previously worked as an outreach organizer focused on Asian American and Pacific Islander communities on former San Francisco Mayor London Breed's unsuccessful 2024 reelection campaign.
