IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor for Arm and Z Workloads
IBM on Monday unveiled a pioneering dual-architecture mainframe processor at the Hot Chips 2026 conference, marking the first time a single chip core can natively execute both IBM Z and Arm instruction sets concurrently. The announcement, made on August 24, 2026, represents the first concrete hardware outcome of a strategic partnership between IBM and Arm announced in April. The new processor is designed to allow enterprises to run Arm-native Linux environments alongside traditional z/OS and existing Linux applications on IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.
