Hyundai delays in-house self-driving software to 2029, leans on Nvidia

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a dual-track strategy for autonomous driving, planning to deploy Nvidia-powered systems in 2028 while delaying its proprietary software until late 2029. The South Korean automaker outlined the roadmap at an event at the headquarters of its autonomous driving subsidiary, 42dot, in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The plan involves using Nvidia's validated technology to accelerate market entry and data collection, while developing its own system, Atria AI, for long-term independence. Hyundai will integrate Nvidia's Hyperion 10 computing platform to roll out Level 2 systems in the first half of 2028 and more advanced Level 2+ systems in the second half of that year. Level 2 allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on highways, while Level 2+ extends hands-free driving to urban roads. Vehicles equipped with the proprietary Atria AI software are targeted for the second half of 2029. This represents a delay from an original target of late 2027. Hyundai Motor Group President Park Minwoo, a former Nvidia executive, said the 2029 timeline is a deliberate strategic choice to avoid rushing an immature system.
