Hong Kong Jails Ex-Banker Over $470K Crypto Bribes

Published 20 September 2026

A Hong Kong court has sentenced a former China Construction Bank Asia manager to four years in prison for accepting cryptocurrency bribes to authenticate false bank documents valued at over $1.6 billion. The case highlights the use of digital assets in financial crime and has prompted an ongoing investigation into other implicated individuals. Lam Chunyin, 32, was sentenced on September 18, 2026, after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantages. District Court Judge Ernest Lin Kamhung ordered Lam to repay approximately HK3.7 million to the bank, an amount equal to the bribes he received. The judge noted that while a six-year term was the starting point, it was reduced by one-third due to Lam's guilty plea. According to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), Lam worked as a customer relationship manager at CCB Asia's Causeway Bay branch, a role that did not cover business credit facilities or letters of credit. Between April and June 2022, he conspired with a department head from Vesttoo Limited, a now-defunct fintech platform, and other associates to receive over 470,000 in Tether (USDT) cryptocurrency.
