Himalayan Glacier Collapse Triggers Deadly Nepal-Tibet Flood
A catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalayas triggered a massive torrent of ice, rock, and mud that tore through mountain valleys along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, killing hundreds and leaving nearly 3,000 people missing. The disaster, described as one of the largest in Nepalese history, has prompted a massive rescue operation now hampered by adverse weather and the looming threat of a secondary flood from a newly formed barrier lake. The collapse occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m. local time on August 26, 2026, when a large section of a high-altitude glacier sheared away from a slope near Langtang Lirung. An estimated 27 million cubic metres of ice and rock plunged about 1.2 kilometres vertically into the Lhende Khola river catchment. The impact generated a seismic event initially mistaken for an earthquake, but the United States Geological Survey later confirmed the signal was produced by the landslide itself. The resulting debris flow, described by scientists as moving like "liquid concrete," reached speeds of up to 193 kilometres per hour, damming the river temporarily before unleashing a destructive surge downstream.
