Himalayan flood death toll nears 1,400

The confirmed death toll from devastating flash floods in the Himalayas has risen to nearly 1,400, with recovery and search operations continuing. Authorities in Nepal reported 1,341 deaths on the Nepalese side, while Tibet recorded 43 fatalities. The disaster, triggered by a glacial collapse on August 26, 2026, has left more than 5,000 people missing. Hundreds of workers are among the missing, many believed to be trapped in tunnels and shafts at 11 hydropower plants and a solar power facility that were swept away. Specialist teams from India, China, and South Korea are assisting the Nepalese army with search and rescue efforts. As of Saturday, September 5, 2026, Nepal Police had recovered 1,344 bodies. Authorities are working on body recovery, identification, and relief operations. DNA samples have been collected from over 1,200 deceased individuals and more than 1,000 relatives. Security agencies have intensified search and rescue operations, with over 7,900 police personnel deployed. Sixty-five police personnel have been affected by the disaster, and 25 remain unaccounted for. Rescue efforts have yielded some survivors.
