Heavy Rain Disrupts Delhi Travel

Heavy rainfall over the weekend caused significant waterlogging and travel disruptions across Delhi and the National Capital Region, with Indira Gandhi International Airport experiencing flight delays and diversions. The downpours, part of an active monsoon system, inundated roads, triggered traffic snarls, and prompted advisories from airlines and local authorities. The disruptions began on Friday, September 4, when intense rain led to water accumulation on the airport's approach roads and forecourts, particularly around Terminals 2 and 3. The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for the national capital, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rain. Between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday, at least nine flights were diverted to cities including Jaipur, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad, while over 400 flights experienced delays. Delhi International Airport Ltd confirmed the water accumulation and stated that the water was subsequently cleared. The wet weather continued into Saturday, September 5, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Delhi. Rainfall figures recorded that morning included 22 mm at Safdarjung and 25.2 mm at Palam.
