Heartbreakers Reunite With Stapleton for First Show Since Petty's Death

The original members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers reunited for a three-song performance with country star Chris Stapleton at the Americana Honors and Awards on September 16, 2026, marking their first time playing together since Petty's death in 2017. The event at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium also celebrated the band's 50th anniversary and featured the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award. Guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, drummer Stan Lynch, and bassist Ron Blair performed "American Girl," "Breakdown," and "You Wreck Me" with Stapleton. For the final song, Lynch stepped aside and was joined by later Heartbreakers members Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston. The performance was the first time the original lineup had played together in 24 years, since their 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Campbell told the audience, "It's true, we haven't played together since 2017, and it's really emotional and sweet to be here." Following the performance, Stapleton introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award, stating, "Words cannot express how much that catalog of music means to me, but also to the world.
