Hargreaves Lansdown Offers Bitcoin Ether ETNs

Published 5 September 2026

Hargreaves Lansdown, the United Kingdom's largest retail investment platform, began offering access to nine exchange-traded notes (ETNs) linked to Bitcoin and Ether on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The move provides eligible clients with a regulated route to cryptocurrency price exposure, marking a significant shift for a platform that had previously expressed caution regarding digital assets. The newly available ETNs are issued by prominent asset managers including BlackRock's iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares, and Bitwise. These financial instruments allow investors to track the price movements of Bitcoin and Ether without directly owning the underlying cryptocurrencies, managing private keys, or using digital asset exchanges. Annual fees for these products range from 0 percent to 0.35 percent. This launch follows a decision by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in October 2025 to lift a four-year restriction on retail investors accessing qualifying crypto ETNs. Hargreaves Lansdown, however, adopted a more conservative approach than some competitors, publicly stating in October 2025 that Bitcoin was not an asset class.
