Hamilton Retires From Spanish GP With Brake Failure, Concedes Title

Lewis Hamilton retired from the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday after suffering a brake failure that began on lap five, an incident that effectively ended his championship challenge. The Ferrari driver, who started fourth on the grid, reported a sudden loss of braking performance early in the race at the Madrid circuit, forcing him to pull into the pits and retire on lap seven. Hamilton described the sequence of events in his post-race interview, stating that the brake pedal "took a step" while entering Turn 5, causing the car to decelerate abnormally and leading him to brush the barrier. "I hit the brake, the car started stopping and then the pedal took a step and the car didn't decelerate as fast as it would normally," Hamilton said. The problem briefly subsided before returning, ultimately leaving him with no confidence in the car's stopping ability. The retirement followed an early on-track battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Verstappen was instructed by race control to return a position to Hamilton after running off the track and gaining an advantage in the opening corners.
