Gunmen kill at least three in attack on Nigerian market

Gunmen attacked a busy market in Mangu, Plateau State, Nigeria, on Friday night, killing at least three people and injuring several others in the latest of a series of violent incidents in the region. The attack occurred at Yan Gwari Market, a popular vegetable market, at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time as traders and customers were preparing to close for the day. According to Bulus Dabit, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), the assailants opened fire on a vehicle leaving the market, killing two women and a young man on the spot. "At about 8 p.m. on Friday, gunmen shot several times at a vehicle leaving the vegetable market in Mangu, killing two women and a young man," Dabit stated. He added that the victims' identities were not immediately known, and several injured passersby were referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Some reports indicated the death toll may be higher. One account stated that two additional victims later died in a hospital, bringing the total to five. The conflicting figures could not be independently verified as of Saturday. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos.
