Gulveer Singh wins 10,000m silver at Asian Games

Gulveer Singh won silver in the men’s 10,000 metres at the Asian Games in Nagoya on September 25, finishing in 28:29.38 behind Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew, who took gold in 28:27.51. The result improved on the bronze Singh earned in the event at the previous Games in Hangzhou. Balew pulled ahead in the closing stages of the 25-lap race. Singh remained close to the leading group for much of the contest, but Balew’s finish secured the win. Bahrain’s Albert Kiptoo was reported as the bronze medallist; reports gave conflicting times for his finish, so the exact time was unclear. Singh, 28, holds Indian national records in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. He won gold in both events at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, and has also medalled in distance events at other international competitions. The Nagoya silver adds to his record at the Asian Games after his bronze in Hangzhou. After the race, Singh said he had tried to win and was satisfied to improve the colour of his medal. His coach, Scott Simmons, offered a tactical assessment, saying that a faster pace might have left Balew with less energy for the final-lap contest, while acknowledging Balew might still have been too strong.
