Grand Canyon Flooding Damages Water Pipeline, Shuts Lodging

Flash flooding over the weekend at the Grand Canyon killed two people, left a third missing, and severely damaged the park's sole water pipeline, forcing the indefinite closure of hundreds of lodging rooms on the South Rim and threatening significant economic disruption to the region. The damage to the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline, which supplies all water to the South Rim, has halted a major, yearslong repair project and created an uncertain future for tourists, residents, and local businesses. Park officials estimate that about 40% of the aging pipeline was damaged or destroyed by the floods, which also prompted the rescue of roughly 80 people.
