Grand Canyon Flash Flood Kills 2, Leaves 1 Missing

A flash flood tore through the Grand Canyon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, killing two people and leaving one person still unaccounted for as of September 1, while forcing the evacuation of more than 80 others and severely damaging the park's only water pipeline. The disaster unfolded in the Bright Angel Creek and Phantom Ranch area after intense rainfall on the canyon's North Rim. The National Park Service reported the flood began at approximately 2:30 p.m. on August 29, triggered by a brief but intense downpour. The National Weather Service said between 1 and 2.5 centimeters of rain fell within about 30 minutes on the rocky, steep terrain of the Kaibab Plateau.
