Google to Pay £260 Million to Settle UK App Developer Class Action

Google has agreed to pay £260 million to settle a UK class action lawsuit brought by app developers who accused the tech giant of abusing its dominant market position and charging excessive commissions through its Play Store. The proposed settlement, announced on August 27, 2026, resolves claims that Google imposed unfair technical and contractual barriers, funneling developers toward its platform while extracting commissions that typically reached 30 percent on sales. The deal, which requires approval from the UK's Competition Appeal Tribunal at a hearing scheduled for September, represents the largest settlement to date under the country's class action regime for competition claims introduced in 2015. Under the terms of the agreement, £160 million will be allocated to compensate eligible UK-domiciled app developers who sold digital content through Play Store-distributed apps between August 2018 and July 2026. An additional £100 million will cover the legal costs of bringing and funding the action. The original claim had sought more than £1 billion in compensation.
