Google Says Gemini 4 Is in Posttraining, No Date Set

Google DeepMind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu says Gemini 4 is in posttraining, the refinement stage before release, and the company intends to make an early posttraining version available as soon as possible. He hopes it will arrive much earlier than the end of 2026, but Google has announced no firm release date and the model remains unreleased. Kavukcuoglu made the remarks at The Information’s AI Agenda Live Summit this week. He said the company is encouraged by the results so far and wants to continue rapid iterations. Posttraining involves refining a model’s behavior, including safety testing and safeguards, before it is released publicly. The timing and form of the early output have not been specified, so it is unclear whether it would constitute a public launch or a preliminary release. Google is already using Gemini 4 internally to power its Antigravity coding tool, Kavukcuoglu said. That use comes as refinement and safety work continue; it does not mean the model is available to the public. The company has not provided specifications, benchmark results or an independent assessment of the model’s capabilities. Kavukcuoglu also addressed Google’s recent model strategy.
