Google Rolls Out September Pixel Drop With Scam Alerts, VIP Widgets

Published 18 September 2026

Google has begun rolling out its September 2026 Pixel Drop update, delivering expanded scam detection, redesigned contact widgets, and new customization options to Pixel phones dating back to the 2021 Pixel 6. The update, which started on September 15, 2026, also includes improvements to the Pixel Watch and visual changes as part of the Android 17 QPR1 release. A central feature of the update is the expansion of Scam Detection in notifications to nine new countries: the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, and Singapore. This feature, which was previously exclusive to the United States, uses on-device AI to flag suspicious incoming chat notifications with a warning before the user opens the message. Google is also introducing a new Scam Detection feature integrated directly into the Gboard keyboard, which will warn users while they are typing a reply to a suspected scam. However, this Gboard feature is currently available only in the United States. The update brings significant enhancements to the Pixel VIPs feature, which allows users to designate favorite contacts.
