Google opens preorders for new Googlebook AI laptops

Google has opened preorders for its new Googlebook laptops, a premium category of Android-powered devices built around the company's Gemini AI tools. The launch, announced on September 21, 2026, marks a strategic push to move beyond Chromebooks and compete in the higher-end laptop market. The initial lineup consists of five models manufactured by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Devices are scheduled to ship and become available in stores starting October 4, 2026, in the United States, with other countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia following on October 5. Google states the Googlebook operating system is built on the Android technology stack combined with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. The platform is designed to offer seamless integration with Android phones, allowing users to hand off tasks, access phone files, and stream apps between devices. Google's president of Android, Sameer Samat, described the core pitch as creating a laptop that works seamlessly with Android phones, similar to how Macs work with iPhones.
