Google, Nvidia, Emerald AI Launch Alliance for Flexible Data Centers

Google, Nvidia, and startup Emerald AI have launched a new coalition called the AI Energy Management Alliance, or AEMA, to promote data centers that can dynamically adjust their power use to support the electrical grid. The alliance, announced on September 16, 2026, aims to establish industry standards for flexible data centers that can reduce their electricity draw during periods of high demand or grid strain. The founding companies argue that this approach could unlock an additional 100 gigawatts of capacity on the existing U.S. power grid. In exchange for demonstrating verifiable flexibility, the coalition is advocating for utilities and grid operators to provide faster connections for new data center projects. The group includes 18 launch partners, such as AI company Anthropic, chipmaker Analog Devices, and utilities including AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. A flexible data center can respond to grid conditions in several ways. It might shift computing workloads to off-peak hours, draw power from onsite batteries instead of the grid, or inject stored electricity back into the system during emergencies.
