Google Invests 13 Billion Euros in Finnish AI Data Centers

Published 9 September 2026

Google has announced a record 13 billion euro investment, equivalent to $15.1 billion, to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland, marking the technology giant's largest single investment in Europe to date. The capital will be deployed through 2028 to fund the construction of three new state-of-the-art data centers in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, alongside an expansion of its existing facility in Hamina. This initiative is part of Alphabet's broader strategy to accelerate the buildout of computing capacity and secure dominance in the artificial intelligence landscape. Finland was chosen as the primary location due to a combination of factors, including its cold climate which reduces cooling costs for data centers, access to relatively cheap and stable power from nuclear and renewable sources, and available land. Approximately 96 percent of Finland's electricity is generated from carbon-free production, a significant draw for energy-intensive operations like data centers aiming to meet climate goals. The country's robust industrial infrastructure and legal system also contributed to the decision.
