GM Keeps CarPlay Out of EVs, Adds Split Screen to Trucks

General Motors is not restoring Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to its electric vehicles, the automaker confirmed, even as it rolls out a new split-screen software experience for its gas-powered 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. A GM spokesperson confirmed the distinction to journalist Joanna Stern, stating that phone projection is not being rolled out to GM EVs and that the announcement applies only to the new gas-powered light-duty pickups, which have always supported CarPlay and Android Auto. The new software lets CarPlay or Android Auto appear in a large panel alongside GM's native infotainment functions, such as trailering data, tire pressure, maps, and Super Cruise status, instead of taking over the entire screen. GM executives have described the previous full-screen switch as feeling like moving from room to room. GM's executive director of connected apps and services, Michael Wahlstrom, told Bloomberg that the company worked with Apple and Google on the split-screen design, while offering no comment on restoring CarPlay to EVs.
