Global Coral Cover Declines as Heatwaves Shorten Recovery Time

A comprehensive global assessment reveals that coral reefs are experiencing marine heatwaves so frequently they no longer have adequate time to recover, pushing worldwide coral cover to dangerously low levels and risking irreversible decline. The report, released on August 31, 2026, by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, synthesizes over 40 years of data from nearly 37,000 reef sites across 124 countries and territories. The study finds that global hard coral cover has declined by approximately 9.5 percent compared to the 1980-2009 average, a drop primarily attributed to climate-driven heat stress. This decline has accelerated sharply since 2010, following decades of relative stability. The research describes a "staircase of decline," where each major global bleaching event since 1998 has driven a significant loss in coral cover. While a period of recovery between 2017 and 2019 saw coral cover rebound by about 6 percent, demonstrating that reefs can heal if given sufficient time, the intervals between severe heat events are now too short. Bleaching occurs when abnormally warm ocean temperatures cause corals to expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues.
