Global Coral Cover Declines as Heatwaves Shorten Recovery Time

A comprehensive global assessment reveals that coral reefs are experiencing marine heatwaves so frequently they no longer have adequate time to recover, pushing worldwide coral cover to dangerously low levels and risking irreversible decline. The report, released on August 31, 2026, by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, synthesizes over 40 years of data from nearly 37,000 reef sites across 124 countries and territories. The study finds that global hard coral cover has declined by approximately 9.5 percent compared to the 1980-2009 average, a drop primarily attributed to climate-driven heat stress.
