Glasgow Council Warned Over £110M Budget Gap

Glasgow City Council is facing a critical financial situation, grappling with a projected budget gap of approximately £110 million for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 financial years. A report from the Accounts Commission, Scotland's spending watchdog, highlights significant pressures stemming from rising homelessness, unresolved equal pay claims, and growing demand for services, warning that the local authority's finances have been pushed to breaking point. The watchdog has called for greater transparency and clarity regarding the scale of these financial challenges, urging the council to demonstrate robust leadership, responsibility, and oversight. Auditors emphasized the need for the council to ensure it possesses the capacity and skills to manage complex, high-risk programs, including the implementation of a new finance system and a new pay and grading structure, which is deemed critical by April 2027. Homelessness costs represent a major financial strain, with spending projected to increase from £38 million in the 2025-26 financial year to an estimated £56 million in 2026-27. Some reports indicate a higher projection of £75 million for the coming year.
