Germany Blames Russia for Leipzig Drone Attack, Announces Retaliation

Germany has officially blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, 2026, announcing a series of retaliatory measures including the closure of a Russian consulate and cultural center. German officials stated that intelligence findings, forensic analysis of the drone's components, and patterns of operation pointed to Russian state agencies being responsible for the incident, which they characterized as a hybrid attack. The explosives-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at the airport. Authorities believe a faulty trigger mechanism prevented the device from detonating. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul added that the attack was a deliberate decision by Russian leadership to further damage bilateral relations. In response, Germany will close the Russian consulate in Bonn effective September 18, 2026, and terminate the lease for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.
