Gary Oldman Predicts HBO Harry Potter Series Will Surpass Films

Actor Gary Oldman, who portrayed Sirius Black in four of the original Harry Potter films, has predicted that HBO's upcoming television series adaptation will be a more satisfying experience for viewers than the movies. Speaking in an interview, Oldman explained that the television format allows for a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books, which were significantly condensed for the film series. Oldman noted that the films, despite their length, required substantial cuts. "We had to cut a lot, and still we could only get the films down to, like, three hours," he said. "I believe the TV series is gonna do it pretty much word for word, which I think, as a viewer, would be more satisfying." He added that a lot of character detail was sacrificed to fit the traditional "two-and-a-half-hour window" of the films. The first season of HBO's Harry Potter, which adapts the first book, is scheduled to premiere on December 25, 2026. It will consist of eight episodes, providing significantly more runtime than the 2-hour-and-32-minute film adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
