Garvaghy Road march dispute remains unresolved after talks
The Orange Order’s proposed march along Garvaghy Road remains at an impasse after talks chaired by Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant ended without agreement, while residents prepare a fresh legal appeal scheduled for Monday. The Parades Commission has authorised the Portadown District Orange Order to complete its traditional route for the first time since 1998, but residents oppose the march and have protested against it. Bryant said he remained open to further talks and urged calm and compromise. He also encouraged people not to travel to the area or respond to calls for more supporters to gather, saying an influx could further strain police resources. Police have maintained a major public safety operation in Portadown amid demonstrations and gatherings backing both sides. The dispute has continued for several days since the Commission’s decision. Residents’ initial legal action failed, and a sustained protest followed in an effort to prevent the parade from proceeding. Their new appeal is due before the Court of Appeal on Monday. The reports do not establish how the court will rule or whether the march will take place.
