Garfield on Holland films, Avengers role

Published 5 September 2026

Andrew Garfield has not yet congratulated Tom Holland on the recent success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" or his performance in "The Odyssey," stating he wishes to see both films before offering his praise. Garfield explained his position on Wednesday at the premiere of his upcoming historical action drama, "The Uprising," held at the Directors Guild of America in West Hollywood. "I don't want to be disingenuous," Garfield told reporters, emphasizing that he prefers his congratulations to be based on actual viewing rather than a courtesy tied to box office numbers. He added that while a film attracting audiences and making significant money is "an incredible thing," he will reach out to Holland once he has experienced the work. Both "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey" were released within weeks of each other this past summer. Garfield, who previously portrayed Peter Parker in "The Amazing Spider-Man" films and reprised the role alongside Holland in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," expressed no surprise at the enduring popularity of the Spider-Man character.
