Game of Thrones RTS Preview Reveals Faction-Based Gameplay
A hands-on preview of the upcoming real-time strategy game "Game of Thrones: War for Westeros" has offered the first substantial look at gameplay, revealing a title that aims to translate the political and military conflicts of George R.R. Martin's world into the RTS genre. Developed by PlaySide Studios, the demo was showcased following its gameplay reveal at Gamescom 2026 and is available to select players ahead of the game's planned launch in early 2027. The preview build focuses on a Skirmish mode, a fast-paced player-versus-player or player-versus-AI experience. Players choose between two of the game's four confirmed factions: House Stark and House Lannister. The Targaryens and White Walkers are also slated for the final release. Each faction features unique structures, units, and hero characters, such as Jon Snow and Robb Stark for the Starks or Jaime Lannister for the Lannisters. The core gameplay loop involves gathering resources, constructing buildings, and amassing armies to defeat opponents. Two primary resources govern the war effort: Gold, used for basic structures and units, and Influence, which is required to train powerful hero units and advance technology.
