Gambhir says Pandya unfit to bowl 10 overs in ODIs
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that all-rounder Hardik Pandya is not yet fit enough to bowl his full quota of 10 overs in one-day internationals and will not be rushed back into the national team. Gambhir explained that Pandya, who has not played competitive cricket since the IPL 2026 due to a back injury, a quadriceps strain, and a leg niggle, must prove his match fitness through a domestic series before returning. The coach's comments came after India's 3-0 T20I series victory over Afghanistan, which concluded on September 17, 2026. Gambhir outlined a clear pathway for Pandya's comeback, emphasizing the need for caution. "Hardik Pandya can't bowl 10 overs at the moment. We don't want to rush him into international cricket," Gambhir said at a post-match press conference. Pandya has been named in the India A squad for a 50-over series against Australia A in Puducherry, starting October 6, but his inclusion is subject to final fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Gambhir indicated that a strong performance in that series could lead to Pandya's return for subsequent tours.
