Galliano Cancels Met Retrospective Amid Antisemitism Backlash

Fashion designer John Galliano has canceled a major retrospective exhibition of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, following significant backlash over his past antisemitic and racist remarks. The exhibition, titled "John Galliano Horizons," was scheduled to open in May 2027 and would have served as the theme for the accompanying Met Gala. Galliano announced the decision on Monday, August 31, 2026, stating it was made after reflection and discussion with the museum. In a statement posted on Instagram, Galliano said, "After much reflection and discussion with The Met and all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time." He added, "I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it." Galliano, 65, emphasized that meaningful atonement is a continuing responsibility and said he did not want the debate surrounding him to distract from the museum's work or place it in a difficult position.
